Chapter Three
Declan held Danny until he was sleeping deep enough to dream. Until those poor skeletal fingers let go of his arms and relaxed. Only then did he get up and start making his mate some food. Real food. Meat. He got ground beef out of the fridge and shaped it into patties. Got the steaks seasoned with a little salt and pepper. Sweet potatoes went into the microwave to soften and Dec started frying bacon to dice up into those. Danny needed to eat, to feed.
Starving his mate. Scarring him. Drowning him. Bastards. Motherfuckers.
Declan shook his head, pushed the growl back down. He couldnât risk Danny thinking that was meant for him. Those fuckers wouldnât get Danny back. Ever.
If they came looking, well, Declan would show them how incredibly defensible his land was, just like heâd shown his former pack, pretty much. Periodically one of their kind would come by, parade a woman in front of him, and heâd run them off. Like he would ever mate with anyone but his Danny. His perfect, laughing lover.
God, what theyâd done to his Daniel. Trying to ruin him.
He needed to kill someone, tear their throats out and watch them bleed out, prove to Danny that he would defend and protect his mate.
As if his mate has read his mind - not that that was completely outside the realm of possibility, for fuckâs sake - Danny came in, blinking at him, naked, rumpled and still goofy with pillow marks on his face.
âHey, baby. I found a pair of old sweats for you to wear. Theyâll be nice and soft.â Of course, they were dug out from when he was twelve, before his balls had dropped. At least theyâd fit Dannyâs skinny ass.
âThanks. I⦠I was dreaming.â
âWas that bad?â He wasnât sure. Did making love with him cause nightmares or good dreams? It made a difference.
âNo.â He got a half-smile, quirky and utterly charming. âI mean, I wouldnât tell anyone I had it but you, you know, but I can. Tell you, I meanâ¦â
âOf course you can. What was it about?â He beckoned, and Danny came to him.
âRunning.â Dannyâs nose was going overtime, twitching and sniffing, scenting the food.
Heâd start with the sweet potato. Dec grabbed one out of the microwave, splitting it. âI made you a veg, baby. See?â
âThank you. Smells so good.â Danny nuzzled his jaw, body trembling against him.
âMmm.â He turned and took a tiny kiss. Declanâd eaten a bit of bacon, so that would start the chain, let Danny remember. He could feel Dannyâs stomach growl against him. âCome on.â He got a plate together, butter and bacon on the potato.
âI⦠Thereâs butter. Iâm not supposed to eat that.â Dannyâs eyes devoured the plate, the hunger palpable.
âBaby, you need it.â He forked up a bit and held it to Dannyâs lips.
Dannyâs eyes rolled and the blue was back, shining through as the bite was snapped up.
Perfect. Such a good man. Now that he knew it wasnât Dannyâs choice, that heâd been led by terror, Declan knew what to do.
